How to Choose a Study Abroad Agent in Kenya: 2027 Checklist

3 min read

Short answer: a good study abroad agent in Kenya is certified by the Commission for University Education (formerly the Commission for Higher Education), gives you a free eligibility check, tells you its fees in writing before you pay, works directly with the universities it recommends, lets you see your own application and never promises a visa. Use the checklist below to compare any agent, including us.

The 10-point checklist

  1. Certification: the agency is certified in Kenya as a student recruitment agency and can show you the certificate.

  2. A physical office you can visit, with a street address, phone number and opening hours.

  3. A free first consultation and eligibility check based on your actual KCSE, IGCSE, A Level, IB or degree results.

  4. Fees in writing: what you pay the agent, what you pay the university and what you pay for the visa, and when each is due.

  5. Direct university partnerships, so you can check the agent on the university's own agent or partner list.

  6. Choice across several countries, so the advice fits your grades and budget rather than one university's targets.

  7. Real tuition figures for each course, ideally converted to Kenyan shillings so you can compare destinations.

  8. Honest visa guidance: help preparing a complete application, with no promise of approval, because visa decisions are made by the immigration authority.

  9. You keep access to your own documents, application portals and university emails.

  10. Support after the offer: deposit, visa, accommodation, flights and a pre-departure briefing.

Red flags to walk away from

  • A "guaranteed visa" or "guaranteed admission" promise.

  • Large payments before anyone has looked at your results.

  • Asking you to pay university tuition into a personal or agent account instead of the university's own account.

  • Offers to create or edit bank statements, transcripts or certificates.

  • No office, no certificate, or only a WhatsApp number.

Questions to ask any agent before you pay

  • Can I see your certification and the universities you are an official partner of?

  • What exactly do I pay you, when, and what does it cover?

  • Which countries and courses do my grades qualify for, and what is the total yearly cost in KES?

  • Will I have my own login to the university application?

  • What happens if my visa is refused?
