KCSE results usually come out in January; last year's results were released in early January. Whatever your mean grade, there is a route to study abroad. What changes with your grade is which route fits best and how many universities you can choose from. Here is a simple guide to help you plan your next step.

New to the process? Start with our complete guide: how to study abroad from Kenya in 7 steps (grades, costs in KES, visas and deadlines).

If you scored A to B+

Strong results open the most doors.

  • UK: a few universities accept strong KCSE results for direct first-year entry, especially with good English and maths. Many still ask for a one-year foundation first.

  • Canada: most universities accept B+ and above with strong subject grades.

  • USA: many universities accept KCSE for first-year entry, and competitive ones look for B+ and above. SAT or ACT is often optional.

  • Scholarships: your grades may qualify you for merit scholarships, which can cut tuition significantly at many partner universities.

If you scored B to C+

This is where most students start, and the routes are well established.

  • Foundation year: one year at or with a university, then progression into year one of a degree. Common in the UK, Australia, Ireland and Malaysia.

  • College diplomas in Canada: many Ontario and other colleges accept a C+ mean with C+ in English. Diplomas can lead to work permits after graduating.

  • Diploma pathways in Australia: a diploma can lead straight into second year of a bachelor's degree.

  • Community colleges in the USA: two years at a community college, then transfer to a university.

If you scored C or below

You still have options, mostly through pathway programmes and certificates that build up to a diploma or degree. A counsellor can match your subject grades to programmes that accept them, so you do not lose a year.

Your subject grades matter as much as your mean grade

Universities look closely at the subjects linked to your course. Nursing and medicine look at biology and chemistry, engineering at maths and physics, business at maths and English. Tell us the course you want to study so we can check the right grades.

What to do in your first two weeks

  • Keep your result slip safe. You can apply with it while you wait for your KCSE certificate.

  • Decide on 2 or 3 destinations and the course you want.

  • Note the deadlines: the UCAS deadline for UK undergraduate courses starting in September 2027 is 13 January 2027 at 18:00 UK time, and Ontario colleges give equal consideration to applications made by 1 February 2027.

  • Get your passport application started if you do not have one.
