January, May and September Intakes: When Kenyan Students Should Apply

International universities may offer January, May or September intakes, but availability varies by country, institution and programme. Kenyan students should work backwards from the intended start date and allow time for admission, funding, visa processing and travel.

September or autumn intake

September is a major intake in many destinations and often offers the widest programme choice. Demand can also be high. Students should begin researching well in advance, especially when scholarships, competitive programmes or limited accommodation are involved.

January or winter intake

January can be useful for students who need more time after KCSE, missed a September deadline or want an alternative start date. Programme choice may be narrower, so confirm that the exact course—not just the university—is open.

May or spring intake

May intake is available at selected institutions and can provide a faster route for applicants who are ready. Check the academic calendar carefully because orientation, internship cycles and graduation timing may differ.

A practical planning timeline

Nine to twelve months before: choose destinations, assess eligibility and plan finances. Six to nine months before: shortlist programmes, prepare documents and take any required tests. Three to six months before: complete applications, meet offer conditions and organise funding. After receiving the required documents: follow the official visa process and arrange accommodation and travel.

Avoid deadline mistakes

A programme deadline, scholarship deadline, accommodation deadline and visa timeline are different. Record each one separately. Do not wait for the final admission deadline if documents, references or funding evidence will take time.
