A strong study-abroad plan starts with a complete budget, not tuition alone. Kenyan students and families should compare the full cost of each destination before choosing a university or paying an application deposit.

Build your budget in five parts

1. Tuition and academic fees. Confirm the fee for your exact programme and intake directly with the institution. Check whether laboratory, studio, examination, placement or student-service charges are separate.

2. Living costs. Estimate accommodation, food, local transport, phone and internet, personal expenses and winter clothing where relevant. Costs can differ significantly between cities in the same country.

3. Application and visa costs. Allow for application fees, document certification, English-language tests where required, medical examinations, biometrics, visa charges and courier costs.

4. Travel and arrival costs. Include flights, travel insurance, airport transfer, temporary accommodation, rental deposits and basic household items.

5. Emergency reserve. Keep a separate contingency amount for exchange-rate movements, delayed accommodation, health expenses or other unexpected costs.

Compare offers on the same basis

When comparing universities, use one worksheet and one currency. Record tuition after confirmed scholarships, expected living costs, payment deadlines and refund conditions. Do not treat a scholarship as guaranteed until you have a written award.

Questions to ask before paying

Ask whether the deposit is refundable if a visa is refused, whether tuition can be paid in instalments, what the scholarship renewal conditions are, and which expenses are excluded from the published fee. Keep copies of invoices, receipts and official correspondence.
