Nursing Abroad for Kenyan Students: Entry, English and Registration
Updated: 2 days ago
Short answer: Yes, Kenyan students can study nursing abroad, but entry is competitive. You usually need strong biology and chemistry, high English scores (often IELTS 7.0 for nursing in the UK and Australia), an interview and a health and character check. After KCSE most students start with a foundation year. If you plan to work in Kenya, check recognition with the Nursing Council of Kenya first.

Nursing entry by destination
Destination | Typical route | Guide |
|---|---|---|
UK | Foundation or A Levels, then a 3-year BSc Nursing; interview required | |
Australia | Bachelor of Nursing, often via a foundation | |
Canada | BScN at universities (few international places); practical nursing at some colleges | |
USA | Pre-nursing then BSN; licensing via NCLEX | |
Northern Cyprus, Malaysia | English-taught nursing degrees with simpler entry |
What English level do I need?
To register as a nurse in the UK, the Nursing and Midwifery Council asks for IELTS 7.0 overall (6.5 in writing) or an equivalent, and Australia's regulator sets similar levels. Universities often ask for the same.
Can I work as a nurse abroad after graduating?
Graduates can apply to register with the local regulator, such as the NMC in the UK or AHPRA in Australia, and then apply for post-study or work visas. Registration has its own English and practice requirements.
Already a nurse in Kenya?
Qualified Kenyan nurses usually register abroad directly rather than restart a degree, or take a top-up or master's degree. Ask us about the route that fits your experience.
