Study Abroad With IGCSE: What Kenyan Students Need to Know
Updated: 2 days ago
Short answer: IGCSE on its own is usually treated as 11 years of schooling, so it leads to a foundation year or a college pathway rather than direct entry to a degree. Most universities in the UK, Australia, Canada and the USA want A Levels, the IB Diploma or a full high-school programme after IGCSE. Strong IGCSE grades still count: they show your subject foundation and English.

What IGCSE gets you by destination
Destination | With IGCSE only | With IGCSE plus A Levels or IB |
|---|---|---|
UK | Foundation year | Direct entry to year one |
Australia | Foundation year | Direct entry |
Canada | College programmes at some institutions | Direct entry; A Levels may earn credit |
USA | Usually not enough; US universities expect 12 years of schooling | Direct entry, often with credit |
Malaysia, Dubai | Foundation year | Direct entry |
What grades do universities look for?
Foundation programmes usually ask for five IGCSE passes at grade C (4) or above, including English and maths. Strong results in the subjects related to your course help, for example maths and physics for engineering.
Does IGCSE English mean I don't need IELTS?
Sometimes. Many universities accept IGCSE English (First Language, or Second Language at a good grade) instead of IELTS. Student visa rules can still require a test, so check before you book your visa.
