How Much Proof of Funds Do You Need for a Student Visa from Kenya? (2027)

6 min read

Updated: 1 day ago

Short answer: proof of funds means showing a visa officer you can pay your first-year tuition and living costs. For living costs alone, Kenyan students need about KSh 1.9M–2.4M for the UK, KSh 2.2M for Canada, KSh 1.8M for Germany and KSh 1.5M for Ireland. How long the money must stay in the account, and who may hold it, differs by country.

How much money do you need to show for each country?

These are the living-cost amounts set by each government, on top of tuition. Check them again before you apply, because they usually change every year.

What are the bank statement rules in each country?

UK: 28 days in a row

  • You must hold the full amount for 28 days in a row, and the end of that period must fall within 31 days of your application.

  • The statement must show your name, the bank's name and the balance. A parent's account must show theirs.

  • An overseas account must be regulated by the financial regulator in that country and use electronic records.

  • Money must be immediately accessible. Overdrafts, cryptocurrency, stocks and shares and pensions do not count.

  • Kenyan shillings are converted to pounds at the OANDA rate on your application date, so keep a buffer in case the rate moves.

Canada: four months, with a bank consent form

The Nairobi visa office checklist asks for bank statements covering the past four months, each with a signed bank verification consent form so the bank can confirm they are real. You must document any lump-sum deposit and show where it came from. IRCC's general list also gives six months of statements as an example, so a longer history helps.

Ireland: six months, on bank paper

Ireland asks for six months of statements for you and each sponsor, even if someone else is paying. They must be on the bank's headed paper. Internet printouts count only if the bank notarises every page and confirms them in a letter. Handwritten entries and credit cards are not accepted, and large or irregular deposits must be fully explained.

Germany: a blocked account

The German Embassy in Nairobi accepts only an official bank confirmation showing the deposit and the amount available each month. Proof of a transfer alone is not enough. If your university charges fees, show first-year payment or add that amount to the account. Read our guide to studying in Germany after KCSE.

USA: evidence goes to your school first

Your school must see proof of funding before it issues Form I-20. Family bank statements, sponsor documents, scholarship letters and an employer's salary letter can all be used, but each school sets its own list.

Ireland

Germany

Bank statements or sponsor documents, as your school asks

An aunt, uncle or older sibling cannot be your funds holder for an adult UK Student visa. If they are helping you, the money must sit in your own or your parent's account for the full 28 days, and you must be able to show it was legally obtained.

What mistakes cause problems with proof of funds?

  • Depositing a lump sum at the last minute. Ireland will not count unexplained large deposits, and Canada asks where the money came from.

  • Letting the balance dip. In the UK, one day below the required amount during the 28 days breaks the period.

  • Using a statement that is too old. UK evidence must be dated no more than 31 days before you apply.

  • Using savings you cannot reach. The UK needs funds that are immediately accessible, and Ireland asks for a bank letter for deposit or savings accounts.

  • Relying on a SACCO, chama or M-Pesa balance. The rules above are written around regulated bank accounts, so ask a counsellor before relying on these, and move the money early with a clear paper trail.

  • Borrowing a balance or using a fake statement. Banks can be contacted to verify your evidence. Canada warns that false documents mean refusal and a possible five-year ban.

When should you start preparing funds for September 2027?

  1. Now: use the course finder to estimate tuition, then add the living-cost figure above.

  2. Early 2027: decide who is paying and put the money in one regulated bank account. Ireland and Canada look back several months, so regular history matters.

  3. After your offer: pay your deposit and confirm the tuition still to be shown.

  4. Before applying: for the UK, count your 28 days carefully. For Germany, open and fund the blocked account first.

  5. Keep your documents checklist with your statements. New to the process? Start with how to study abroad from Kenya in 7 steps.

Frequently asked questions

How much bank balance do I need for a UK student visa from Kenya?

For applications made from 30 November 2026 you must show £1,203 a month outside London or £1,570 a month in London, for up to 9 months. That is £10,827 (≈ KSh 1.87M) or £14,130 (≈ KSh 2.44M), plus any unpaid first-year tuition shown on your CAS. The money must be held for 28 days in a row.

How many months of bank statements do I need?

It depends on the country. The UK looks at 28 days in a row, ending within 31 days of your application. Canada's Nairobi visa office checklist asks for the past four months. Ireland asks for the last six months, for you and each sponsor. Germany needs a blocked account confirmation rather than statements.

Can my uncle or aunt sponsor my UK student visa?

Not with their own account. For an adult Student visa, the funds can be in your account, your parent's or legal guardian's, or your partner's in some cases. Other relatives are not on the list. Canada and Ireland are more flexible and accept other sponsors with supporting documents.

Can I deposit all the money just before applying?

This is risky. The UK needs the full amount held for 28 days in a row. Canada asks you to document lump-sum deposits and show where the money came from. Ireland says large, unexplained deposits made shortly before applying will not be counted.

Do I need proof of funds for a US student visa?

Yes, but there is no single government figure. You show your school that you or a sponsor can cover tuition and living costs for the study period, and the school issues Form I-20. Keep the same financial evidence ready for your visa interview.

Does a scholarship reduce the money I must show?

Often, but only for what it covers. In Canada a tuition-only scholarship still leaves you to prove living and transport money. In Germany a scholarship must pay at least €992 a month, or a blocked account must cover the shortfall.
