Can I Study in Germany After KCSE? Routes, Costs and Visa (2027)
Short answer: yes, but usually not straight into a state university bachelor's. DAAD says many certificates from outside Europe need a Studienkolleg or two to three semesters of university study at home first. Most state universities charge no tuition, but you must show €11,904 (≈ KSh 1.8M) a year in a blocked account and will usually need German.

Does KCSE give you direct entry to a German university?
German universities need a recognised higher education entrance qualification. DAAD says EU, EEA and Swiss school certificates usually qualify, while others often need extra study first. For KCSE, plan on this extra step unless a university tells you otherwise. Our Germany guide gives the wider picture.
To check your own case, choose Kenya in the DAAD admission database. It covers undergraduate study and its result is not binding, because the final decision always belongs to the university. uni-assist also notes that KCSE provisional results are valid for one year only, so after that you must submit your official leaving certificate.
What are your routes after KCSE?
Route | Who it suits | What you need | Time before your degree |
|---|---|---|---|
Studienkolleg, then the FSP exam | KCSE leavers who want a state university in German | B1–B2 German and usually an entrance exam | Usually 2 semesters |
Start university in Kenya first | Students already at a Kenyan university | 2–3 semesters of comparable study, accepted by the German university | 2–3 semesters at home |
Private university | Students who want English teaching and can pay fees | The university's own entry rules | Ask the university |
IB Diploma or A Levels | International curriculum students | Check subjects in the DAAD database | Often none |
A Studienkolleg teaches your subject area and German up to C1. There are tracks such as T for technical subjects, W for business and economics, and M for medical and biological subjects. Passing the final Feststellungsprüfung (FSP) lets you apply to universities across Germany. Public Studienkollegs are generally free apart from the semester fee. Private ones often charge tuition and only a few offer a state-recognised FSP, so check this before you pay.
Other options by grade are in our entry requirements guide, including KCSE C plain and KCSE C+.

How do you apply for a German student visa in Kenya?

Open and fund your blocked account. See our guide to proof of funds for a student visa.
Prepare your CV with no gaps and a motivation letter you wrote yourself, in German or English.

Frequently asked questions
Is studying in Germany free for Kenyan students?
Tuition is free at most state universities, but life is not. You pay a semester contribution of about €70–430, and you must show €11,904 a year in a blocked account. Baden-Württemberg charges non-EU students €1,500 a semester, and Bavarian universities may charge several thousand euros.
Can I study in Germany with KCSE only?
Usually not straight into a state university degree. DAAD says many certificates from outside Europe need a Studienkolleg, or two to three semesters of comparable university study at home. Check Kenya in DAAD's admission database and confirm with the university, which makes the final decision.
What KCSE grade do I need for Germany?
No single mean grade applies. Each university and Studienkolleg sets its own selection, and Studienkollegs usually add an entrance exam. Send us your results for a free eligibility check, then confirm your subject with the institution's international office.
Do I need to learn German?
For most degrees, yes. Most programmes are taught in German and ask for at least B2, and Studienkolleg courses ask for B1–B2 before you start. English-taught programmes need proof of English instead.
How much is the blocked account for Germany from Kenya?
€11,904 for one year, or €992 a month (≈ KSh 1.8M). You open it before applying for your visa, and the German Embassy in Nairobi needs an official bank confirmation, not just proof of a transfer.
Does DAAD give scholarships to KCSE leavers?
Check each programme in DAAD's scholarship database, because every call sets its own rules. Some programmes require a first degree, so do not plan your bachelor's around a DAAD award. DAAD's typical monthly stipend for master's students is €992.
