Short answer: Sometimes. Some universities in the UK, USA, Northern Cyprus, Malaysia and parts of Europe accept a strong KCSE or IGCSE English grade, a degree taught in English, or their own English test instead of IELTS. Others accept PTE, TOEFL or Duolingo. Australia's Student visa and many Canadian institutions still expect a recognised test, so check both the university and the visa rules.

Is skipping IELTS a good idea?

Not always. A test score can make a visa application stronger and opens more universities. If you are close to the required level, one IELTS, PTE or TOEFL sitting may save you from a narrower shortlist.
