Study Abroad Entry Requirements: KCSE, IGCSE, A Levels and IB

Students in Kenya apply to international universities through several education systems. KCSE, IGCSE, A Levels and the International Baccalaureate are assessed differently, so the correct route depends on the qualification completed, subject combination, grades, programme and university.

KCSE applicants

After KCSE, a student may qualify for direct undergraduate admission, a foundation programme, an international year one, a diploma or another pathway. Universities normally consider the overall grade and relevant subject grades. The correct option must be confirmed for the exact programme; a general country-level statement is not enough.

IGCSE applicants

IGCSE is generally a secondary-school qualification rather than a complete university-entry qualification on its own. Many students continue to A Levels, the IB Diploma or a recognised foundation programme before starting a degree. Some institutions offer other pathways, so students should verify the required progression route rather than assuming direct entry.

A Level applicants

A Levels are widely used for direct undergraduate entry. Universities may specify the number of subjects, overall grades and grades in particular subjects. Engineering, computing, health sciences, economics and other specialised degrees can have strict mathematics or science requirements. Predicted grades may support an initial application, but the final offer can remain conditional on confirmed results.

International Baccalaureate applicants

IB applicants are commonly assessed using the total Diploma score together with Higher Level subject results. Some programmes require specific Higher Level subjects or grades. Students should distinguish between the full IB Diploma, individual IB courses and other school credentials because universities may treat them differently.

Other baccalaureates and national curricula

French, European, American, Canadian and other national or international school qualifications may also be accepted. Each university publishes its own equivalency guidance. Where the qualification is not listed, request written confirmation from the admissions office.

English-language evidence

English requirements are separate from academic entry requirements. A university may accept prior education in English, a school qualification or an approved language test, depending on its policy. Do not assume an exemption; obtain confirmation for the course and intake.

Documents to prepare

Prepare your passport, final or predicted results, school transcripts, certificates, personal statement, references and any required portfolio or test results. Ensure names and dates are consistent across all documents. If a document is not in an accepted language, follow the institution's official translation requirements.
